Two Algarve charities have joined forces to support 36 local families affected by the Covid-19 crisis.
‘Algarve Emporium Charity’ and ‘Support for Families in the Algarve’ are legally registered charities under the name Associação Guarda-Chuva, based in Tunes, Silves. Together they are supplying needy families with fresh and staple foods in Tunes, Algoz, Alcantarilha, Alcantarilha Gare, Guia, Vale Parra and Albufeira.
“We are working closely with local Freguesias (parish councils), forging links with local small businesses and building networks with local communities,” said Caroline Langston and Su Davis from the charities.
“For some time now, we have had a regular collection point outside Iceland Overseas in Guia on the 15th and last day of every month when we accepted items that would help struggling families and homeless people. Items such as clothes, shoes (especially children’s and size 41/42 men’s trainers), small electrical household items and toiletries.”
These dates are continuing but the location has moved to the carpark near Nike, in Guia. “We are currently only asking for food donations and toiletries.”
Food donations are also being received at Between the Lines Restaurant in Tunes (Fridays, 11.30am to 12.30pm) and at Mr. Singh Indian Restaurant in Galé (Fridays, 12pm to 1pm – Mr. Singh is offering 10% off your takeaway when you donate food items).
In addition, there is a trolley for food donations and collection tins in Iceland, Guia, and there is also a trolley in Intermarché at Cerro Grande, Albufeira.
Additionally, the charities are also working closely with Natural Joki Flow, holistic treatment therapists, who are offering complimentary distant Reiki treatments to frontline workers including care workers, nurses, doctors and emergency staff.
