Changes at Bowls Portugal

Members of the Valverde Bowling Club in Almancil, the first club in Portugal to be owned and run by the members, have voted to join Bowls Portugal.

The decision was made to improve the opportunities of members of the club being able to represent Portugal in the international bowling matches held throughout the world every year and in order to become members of World Bowls.

This Valverde decision is a significant development for Bowls Portugal, who already have Vila de Luz, another of the Algarve bowling clubs successfully owned and managed by their members, as partners in the Federation.

John Hewitson, the newly elected president of Bowls Portugal, said: “The interest shown by many bowlers and clubs in Portugal, as well as from our associates across the border is very encouraging and extremely exciting for the new team organising Bowls Portugal.

“We will be organising a full programme of events and competitions for all our members in the coming year and will be developing a Bowls Portugal squad to play on an international level from the members on the World Bowls circuit.”

While established members should have new opportunities to play, World Bowls is also trying to encourage more Portuguese players to the game and also to develop junior participation in the sport.

“We already have a valued sponsorship deal with Eurofinesco, for which we are extremely grateful and would invite any other interested would be sponsors to contact the committee,” said John Hewitson.

Membership to Bowls Portugal costs €5 per person per year.
