Chamber activities

Now that the summer holiday season is drawing to a close, thoughts are once again turning to serious business matters, and the British-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in the Algarve has an interesting and varied programme of events planned for the autumn season.

The first working seminar of the season takes place on Tuesday, September 21, at the Tivoli Almansor in Carvoeiro, at 10.30am, and the theme is ‘Buying and selling a business in the Algarve’. Judy Sharp, director of the BPCC committee in the Algarve, will lead a round table debate with plenty of opportunity for questions and discussions. Taking part will be Morag Richardson, a commercial real estate agent, Lyn Santos Cravo, a management accountant, and a recent newcomer to the Algarve who has personal experience of the challenges he faced before buying a business here.

The questions covered will include: ‘What are you actually selling?’; ‘How much is it worth – and how do you arrive at that figure?’ and ‘What can I do to make my business more saleable?’ From an accounting point of view, Lyn will cover areas such as presenting typical Portuguese-type accounts in a format, easily understandable for non-Portuguese buyers, how to cope with the various sets of accounts that a business may have, and what the tax implications are.

This will be followed on Wednesday, October 11, by an after work social networking event – no working agenda, purely an opportunity to meet other BPCC members and exchange ideas and business cards.Everyone is invited to come along to the Vale do Milho clubhouse in Carvoeiro, from 7pm. BPCC Algarve committee members will be there to host the event, make relevant introductions and answer questions about the services provided by the Chamber.
