Cezanne inspires Scottish artist

Mhairi McGregor’s still life studies are frequently compared to the paintings of Cezanne. Currently exhibiting a selection of her work at Galeria Corte-Real in Paderne, her compositions are vibrant and simple, the paint applied in strong and blocky layers.

Making initial sketches from life, Mhairi limits her colour palette and develops each picture into an abstraction of the original scene or subject. Widely travelled – taking inspiration from what she experiences and sees – she always returns to her native country where she is a member of the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society.

Mhairi has had numerous solo exhibitions in Scotland and is represented by galleries in London, Bath and Cornwall but this is the first occasion her paintings have been seen in Portugal.

Throughout the summer, at weekends, complimentary fine wines and savouries are served to visitors on Corte-Real’s garden terrace.

Signposted from Boliqueime, Ferreiras and Paderne, the gallery is open Thursday to Sunday, 11am until 5pm. Telephone 912 737 762.
