Centre Algarve, near Moncarapacho, recently welcomed its 250th volunteer. When it opens later this year, it will be Europe’s first holiday centre equipped solely for special needs and handicapped children and their families.
Project Manager Tom Willis said: “We have had volunteers from all over the world. Only last week a builder from Manchester phoned up to say that due to the bad weather in the UK he could not work, so would be on the next flight over!” The project, the brain-child of Essex businessman Andy Mahoney, will be fully equipped with wet rooms, hoists, therapy bed, education centre and sensory room equipment, some of which has already been donated.
Almancil-based GoodLife Spas recently donated a reconditioned Jacuzzi, which will provide much therapeutic value for those with restricted mobility.
“We were only too pleased to help this fantastic project and we will do all the necessary work to ensure it is fully operational,” said Thomas Grunewald of GoodLife Spas.
There is still much to be done before the first children arrive, so if you have any spare time or would like to help raise funds by organising a garden party, raffle or fun night in a local bar, please contact Tom or Belinda Willis.
