Central Artes, the Algarve’s latest cultural programme which debuted last year, is returning in 2021 after a “forced break due to the Covid-19 pandemic”.
Organised by the councils of Albufeira, Loulé, Faro, Olhão and Tavira, the programme will feature 11 shows as well as a series of workshops that aim to involve the audience in the fun.
Festivities begin in Albufeira with the show ‘El Niño del Retrete – Cartoon Toylette’ on Sunday (May 16) by the Teatro nelle Foglie circus-theatre company, which will also be organising two workshops the day prior and on the day of the show.
Another interesting concept being brought to life is a project called ‘Agentes Internos’ (Internal Agents) by Ana Borralho and João Galante from casaBranca, which is open to anyone aged from 15 to 80. The goal will be to create a play with 10 people on stage “in a game of questions about sustainability in broad terms”.
‘Agentes Internos’ will begin at Albufeira’s municipal auditorium with rehearsals taking place between May 24 and 28 before the final show on May 29, moving on to Olhão’s municipal theatre between May 31 and June 4 for another series of rehearsals before the June 5 show. The initiative will also take place in Estoi (Faro) at Cinema Ossónoba, with rehearsals taking place from June 21 to 25 before the June 26 performance.
Another highlight, this time in Loulé, promises to be the ‘Flotados’ show by David Moreno and Cristina Calleja, described as an “incredible performance which includes a hanging piano and hanging dancers”. It is scheduled for Friday, May 28, with two workshops taking place the day prior.
Meanwhile on Saturday, July 10, the Vol’e Temps theatre company will bring the ‘Distans’ show to Olhão as well as two workshops.
All in all, Central Artes will organise over 50 events in the coming months in the five municipalities. Due to the unpredictable evolution of the pandemic, the dates of some of the events will only be revealed at a later stage.
