A New York seafood restaurant has released a 140-year-old lobster back into the sea after continuous requests and pressure from animal rights group, Peta.
George, the giant lobster, weighting a total of 28kg, was captured off the Canadian coast of Newfoundland in January and placed in a display tank at the City Crab and Seafood restaurant.
After initially blocking the crustacean’s freedom, staff at the restaurant decided to give in and grant George the freedom to live out his days in the sea.
Ingrid Newkirk, president of Peta, said: “We hope that their kind gesture serves as an example that these intriguing animals don’t deserve to be confined to tiny tanks or boiled alive.”
