Cemetery revolt

The little village of Miradeses, in Mirandela, is up in arms over an electioneering ploy that backfired and left them with a cemetery full of dogs and cattle.
The problems started after the former parish council knocked down the cemetery’s old wall and began building a new one eight days before last year’s municipal elections.
The elections saw them ousted and work on the wall stopped.
“Now cows and dogs can get in,” local resident Maria Pires told Correio da Manhã newspaper. “They trample the flowers and could break the gravestones.”
The incoming parish council told the paper they don’t have the money to resolve the situation, but are petitioning the local council for funding.
