The Algarve is well-known for its delicious, juicy oranges – the EN125 being lined with dozens of roadside vendors. But next week in Portimão, and all under one roof, the citrus fruit becomes king for the ‘Festa da Laranja’ being held at the local market for the seventh year running.
Taking place between February 11 and 15, customers will be able to purchase the fruit at low prices, as well as participate in cooking demonstrations and tastings.
Throughout the ‘festival’, any purchases of over 3kgs of oranges will qualify customers for a special gift: free demonstrations and tastings between 9am and 1.30pm led by students on the cookery and baking course at the local hotel and tourism school of Portimão.
Later, between 5pm and 8pm, clients will have the opportunity to taste delicious fresh orange juice from the workers of the market’s fruit section.
On the morning of February 11, Rosa Nunes Pharmacy will also be raising awareness about healthy lifestyles and the importance of Vitamin C for the body.
Valentine’s Day will not be forgotten either, with students from the tourism school once again showing off their abilities with a number of delicious treats involving orange mixed with chocolate.
Finally, on February 15, fitness instructor Andreia Daniel will be taking a Zumba class (dance fitness programme) outside the main building, as a way of raising awareness about the importance of regular physical activity.
