CELEBRATE THIS New Year’s Eve in style by attending one of the many free public street parties with concerts and fireworks that will be taking place across the Algarve on December 31.
Albufeira, Quarteira, Faro, Portimão and Monte Gordo, among other towns, will soon be preparing stages for open air parties, that will fill the region with music for all tastes including jazz, hip-hop and Latin rhythms, pop and rock as well as fantastic fireworks displays.
PORTIMÃO – Portuguese girl band Just Girls will be performing a concert from 6pm along the riverside area of Portimão. From 10.30pm, Les Farfadais will be entertaining the crowd with an acrobatics, light and sound show.
At the same time, Portuguese ban NBAND will perform a concert along Alvor riverfront.
At midnight, Portimão and Alvor riverfront and Praia da Rocha will play host to a huge fireworks display accompanied by music.
The party will carry on after midnight with a Brazilian music concert by Canta Bahia in Portimão and with Latin rhythms from Amerika Libre in Alvor.
ALBUFEIRA – Public concert along the seafront by Portuguese bands Rosa and Um Segredo Fechado from 10pm until midnight, followed by a fireworks display. From Midnight, British reggae ban UB40 will welcome in the New Year with a concert. Call 289 599 500.

QUARTEIRA – Praça do Mar – Concert by Portuguese band Deolinda and David Fonseca from 10.30pm. There will be a fireworks display at midnight. Call 289 400 600
TAVIRA – Praça da Républica New Year’s celebrations from 10pm with performance by Seis de Portugal orchestra followed by fireworks. Music by DJ Fábio Palma after midnight. For more information call 281 320 500.
VILA REAL DE SANTO ANTÓNIO – Western area of Monte Gordo – December 31 – concert by Anjos and other artists, from 10pm. Also concert by Grupo Musical Nova Dimensão at Praça Marquês de Pombal from 10pm.
OLHÃO – A fireworks display one kilometre in length, accompanied by music will take place from midnight along the riverfront in Olhão, from the market place to the marina. More than 42,000 fireworks will be launched during the 15 minute display. This will be followed by a concert of Latin American music by the band La Sucursal S.A.
LISBON – More than 12,000 fire works will be launched near Torre Vasco da Gama near the northern part of Parque das Nações in Lisbon at midnight to celebrate the New Year. The public can gather for free at the Expo 98 Park for the event which will be accompanied by music.
