A GROUP of over 20 Casuals tennis players and guests enjoyed perfect conditions for a weekend’s tennis played at the Vilamoura Tennis Club.
Traditionally, the Casuals spend one weekend in the spring playing matches against two Algarve clubs. However, this year, due to the success of these tours, the spring visit was solely in the west Algarve, with two days’ tennis against players from the Rocha Brava club and their guests.
The second weekend was spent with old friends from the Vilamoura club. On Saturday, the match comprised of eight couples from each club playing for 20 minutes against every opposing pair. With summer-like temperatures, players did remarkably well to finish almost three hours competitive tennis in such conditions. In a very tight match, the Casuals ran out winners 30 matches to 27 with seven drawn.
Sunday’s tennis involved a very interesting format with everyone mixing in together. Again, after 20 minutes’ play, winning pairs moved on to the next court, split and played with the two losers. This continued for six rounds, enabling everyone to get to play with many different partners from the two clubs.
The Casuals’ members enjoyed several excellent meals together over the weekend, the final Sunday lunch being spent with Glenise and Mo Jones, their hosts and many members of their team.
Due to the great success of the two weekends, the Casuals Tennis Section is determined to repeat the same formula next year. Any members are welcome to play, irrespective of their level of tennis.
A new innovation in the section will be top level tennis coaching, available to members as from mid October for a very low price. Already, many members of all ability ranges are signing up, but new members will be accommodated.
A Coaching Weekend is also planned, with group sessions, split by ability levels and led by at least two excellent coaches.
A singles competition, for all members of the Casuals Sports Club, is currently taking place over several weekends. Men and ladies will play for the Hennessy Cups kindly donated by Patrick Achiam of Hennessy’s Irish Pub.
Otherwise, social play continues throughout the weekends, with all members mixing in together to ensure plenty of games for everyone.
Potential new members should contact Greg Leadbeater, tennis captain, on 214 579 612 or 214 663 252 if interested in more details.
