Castro Marim fixes rundown fort wall

Castro Marim council has announced the start of works to repair the wall of Castro Marim’s São Sebastião fort.

The project, with an estimated cost of around €170,000, aims to stop the wall’s progressive degradation and collapse, and is part of a larger investment that has already started in other parts of the wall.

Community funding will cover 70% of the costs as the project is backed by the CRESC Algarve 2020 programme.

In a statement, the council says the goal is to “preserve the authenticity and integrity” of one of the town’s most historic landmarks.

It also adds that the project has been “rubber stamped” by the Ministry of Culture and that the works will be supervised by an archaeologist.
