Cascais mayor complains borough lacks sufficient numbers of Maritime Police to ensure compliance with ‘sanitary rules’

No sooner had the government announced fines for people ‘not complying with sanitary regulations’ on the nation’s beaches this summer (click here) than Cascais mayor Carlos Carreiras complained his borough lacks sufficient numbers of Maritime Police to ensure beachgoers toe all the lines. He told TVI that the municipality has a coastline that stretches from Cascais to Ericeira (with multiple beaches), but only 17 police agents to ‘patrol them’. Considering no-one will relish a fine for not wearing a mask to the beach, or while playing football on the sands with their children, this news will probably be welcomed.
