After one of the longest trials in Portuguese history, another VIP prisoner jailed for his part in the Casa Pia child sex abuse scandal is due to leave Sintra’s Carregueira jail to complete his prison term at home, using an electronic bracelet.
Former UNESCO ambassador Jorge Ritto, serving six years and eight months for various sexual offences, suffers from a terminal illness, writes Correio da Manhã, and cannot receive the attention he requires in prison.
Ritto’s release follows that of Ferreira Dinis, the doctor condemned to seven years behind bars for four counts of sexual assault on three victims.
Dinis also left the prison for health reasons. Meantime, Manuel Abrantes, another Casa Pia prisoner, is also seeking to be able to complete the rest of his five-year-and-nine-month term ‘at home’, says the newspaper.
