THE FIRST memorial tournament of the Serra de Monchique Golf Club will take place on Saturday, April 21 in honour of Captain James Philippson, the first British soldier to be killed in the current conflict in Afghanistan.
James was Silves resident Trish Quinlan’s elder son and was killed in action in Afghanistan on June 11, 2006, while attempting to rescue comrades that had come under enemy fire.
Following this tragedy, James’ family and friends, decided to set up a Trust in James’ name with all proceeds donated to the Army Benevolent Fund, Combat Stress Trust, and other worthwhile causes, benefiting needy and injured children in the country in which the funds are raised.
The golf tournament will be a Texas scramble with teams of four players competing against each other. The winning team will receive the Captain James Philippson Cup. Participants can either enter a full team or be put into teams by organisers. There is a 10 euro entry fee plus green fees.

Friends and guests are welcome to play and attend the dinner in the evening, which will be held at the Quinta do Gramacho Golf Club. A raffle will be held after the dinner with prizes including rounds of golf, meals and beauty treatments. The dinner costs 25 euros per person and includes a three course meal.
