THE PROGRAMME for Faro National Capital of Culture is gaining momentum, with September boasting a wealth of cultural events to suit all tastes.

This month’s highlights include a recital by acclaimed soprano June Anderson and pianist Jeff Cohen, and a performance by the Orquestra do Algarve featuring well known pianist Pedro Burmester, among other delights.

Another musical event that is sure to be popular is a recital, entitled ‘Música para Cinema’ (Music for Cinema), by pianist Bernardo Sassetti at Faro’s Municipal Theatre this Saturday, September 3. Entrance costs 10 euros and there is a 50 per cent discount available for the under 25s and over 65s – ticket outlets are listed at the end of this article.

Music by Beethoven, Brahms and Mendelssohn will feature in the concert by Orquestra do Algarve and soloist Pedro Burmester on Wednesday, September 7 at 10pm, at Faro’s Municipal Theatre. This event is part of the commemorations for Dia da Cidade (Faro City Day). In order to reach out to the community and make the concert accessible to all, tickets cost just five euros each.

American soprano June Anderson ranks among the most important singers in the international opera and concert world today and was the first non Italian ever to win the prestigious Bellini d’Oro prize. Together with celebrated pianist Jeff Cohen, the duo will perform compositions from Tchaikovsky, Bernstein and Strauss at Faro’s Municipal Theatre on September 10. Tickets cost just 10 euros each and there is a 50 per cent discount available for the under 25s and over 65s.

Theatre

Top Portuguese theatre company, Bando, will be performing a series of shows in the Loulé village of Querença, between September 25 and October 9. There will also be an exhibition of photographs, costumes and scenery used in some of their productions. For more information, visit www.obando.pt. Show and exhibition entrance is free.

Dance

If your passion is dance, then you definitely won’t want to miss Plataforma de Dança Contemporânea Portuguesa, a dance production based on the work of 16 different choreographers from Portugal’s contemporary dance scene. The shows take place at Faro’s Municipal Theatre, Teatro Lethes and Lagoa’s Municipal Theatre, on September 17, 18 and 19 respectively. Entrance costs five euros. Exhibitions

Included in the wealth of exhibitions opening this month as part of Faro National Capital of Culture are the following:

An International Photography and Art Fair takes place at Sociedade Recreativa Olhanense, in Olhão, from September 9 to 15. Entrance is free. Telephone 282 442 587 for more information.

From September 7 to 30, the Armaposta Sculpture Exhibition will be taking place at
