Canned wine ‘sells like hot cakes’ to Portugal’s youth

That may be a slight exaggeration, but according to reports, sales of a new brand of ‘vinho verde’ (sparkling white wine) in cans started last month and have ‘exceeded all expectations’. For the sector, says SIC television news, it’s being seen as a ‘format adequate to modern times’, particularly attractive to the young crowd. Right now, ‘vinho verde’ is the only variety available in these cans, which “make a similar sound on opening to a soft drink or a can of beer”. Plans are to extend to Rosé and then it will no doubt be a short hop (possibly a lurch) to reds.
