The Silk Road, an ancient network of trade routes in Eurasia that got its name from the lucrative trade in silk carried out along its length, is the theme of Lagoa’s fourth candlelit event ‘Mercado de Culturas…à Luz das Velas’, which is taking place between July 6 and 9.
What makes the event so special are the thousands of candles that are lit every day in the form of dozens of symbols from different cultures and religions along the town’s streets.
Around 50 craftsmen from all over the world are taking part, mostly from areas linked by the Silk Road.
There will also be photography exhibitions on display at the São José convent (from 7pm to 1am), musical performances by a number of artists, Armenian and Persian dancing workshops, Bonsai tree exhibitions, and even an eatery set up especially for the event in the cloisters of the convent.
Also confirmed is a new “chill out area” which will feature entertainment provided by DJ Charlie Spot.
Organised by Lagoa council, the event is expecting to attract around 40,000 people.
Admission is free.
