Candlelit concerts to bring world music to Lagoa in July

A series of candlelit concerts will be held in Lagoa in July as a “spiritual replacement” for the town’s popular annual candlelit market, which will not take place this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the local council has announced.

The event had become one of the borough’s main summer events, attracting around 40,000 people per edition. But due to the need to avoid large gatherings, it has been replaced this year with a string of concerts by international artists.

On Thursday, July 8, Spanish group Axabeba will grace Lagoa with its brand of “Medieval Mediterranean music”. The following day (July 9), Chinese artist Lu Yanan will perform traditional Chinese music while on the last night (July 10), Trio Mêd will bring the event to a close with a night of traditional Cape Verdean music.

All concerts, starting at 10pm, will take place by candlelight between Rua Gago Coutinho and Rua João de Azevedo Lobo, near Lagoa’s CTT post office.

Tickets cost €8 per show and can be purchased “preferably” online at www.ticketline.pt (search for Mercado das Culturas das Velas) or at Worten, Fnac, the Carlos do Carmo Auditorium or Lagoa’s Balcão Único.
