Cancer screening

A BREAST cancer screening programme set up three years ago has so far examined 26,000 women in the Algarve.

The screening, which targets women aged between 50 and 67, began in September 2005 as a joint initiative between the Algarve Oncology association and the regional health administration (ARS).

According to doctors responsible for the project 70 per cent of the cases diagnosed are treatable thanks to early detection.

Statistics for the Algarve have revealed that each year an average of 175 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the Algarve.
