The Alentejo regional health department was due to receive an award from the European Cervical Cancer Association at the European Parliament on Wednesday, January 21, for a screening programme that it carried out last year.
Around 20,000 women between the ages of 30 and 65 were screened for cervical cancer in the Alentejo region, as part of a health campaign that identified 300 cases that were treated before they developed into malignant tumours. Portugal was also due to be commended for the introduction of a vaccine against the cancer in its national vaccination plan.
