Canadian tourist staying in Albufeira tests positive for coronavirus

A Canadian holidaymaker in his 60s who had been staying at a hotel in Albufeira has tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

It is the first confirmed case of an infected tourist in Portugal.

The news was reported by SIC TV yesterday, bringing the number of confirmed cases in the Algarve to six.

The hotel’s name has not been reported.

The national health board (DGS) has yet to officially place this case in the Algarve’s tally, registering it on its official Covid-19 bulletin in a separate category called “foreigner”.

SIC reports that the man, who had been at the hotel for around a month already, sought treatment at two private health clinics in Albufeira and a private hospital in Faro before finally travelling to Faro’s public hospital where he tested positive for Covid-19.

The man has been intubated and is in the hospital’s intensive care unit albeit in “stable condition”.
