Canada declares June as Portugal Heritage month

Canada’s House of Commons has unanimously approved a bill to name June as Portugal Heritage Month and June 10 as Portugal Day in Canada.

The proposal was presented by Julie Dzerowicz, an MP for Davenport, Toronto, the Canadian district where most Portuguese live.

“I am incredibly proud that my first Private Member’s Bill pays tribute to the contributions of the Portuguese to Canada, and I am very excited to celebrate Portuguese culture and traditions with Canadians across the country in June,” Dzerowicz wrote on her Facebook page.

“So grateful to the Portuguese community in Davenport and across Canada for their inspiration and support,” she added.

Over half a million Portuguese are believed to live in Canada, 60% to 70% of which from the Azores archipelago.
