A campaign is underway to find a home for Donald – a pure-breed Rafeiro Alentejano pup with a couple of strange features.
When he was found wandering near Arão a few weeks ago, rescuers could see straight away there was something ‘wrong’ with his legs: the front ones looked longer than the back ones, and they were ominously bowed.
Turns out it’s all related to diet – or rather lack of it.
Whoever dumped Donald must have been feeding him ‘badly’, say rescuers at animal charity Cadela Carlota: large breed dogs need good food, good conditions and minimal exercise as their bones develop.
Donald clearly hadn’t been getting any of these requirements, and has now been put on a course of supplements that are getting the right results. Bit by bit his legs are starting to straighten.
He’s “not yet perfect”, says the charity, “but a full recovery is expected”.
Which leads to the burning question, who will take Donald now that he’s ready to swagger back into the world?
Say rescuers, “Donald is a very special puppy. Everyone who meets him falls for his charm and sweet personality. In his pen at the Cadela Carlota Rescue Shelter, he puts up with seven much smaller puppies jumping all over him, biting his tail and generally being boisterous. Donald takes it all in his stride with grace and good humour.
