Câmaras slammed over tolls

A request made by the Algarve Câmaras Association (AMAL) to the government to extend the toll payment exemption period on the A22 has been slammed by a civic movement based in the capital of the Algarve.

The Vamos Salvar Faro (Let’s Save Faro) “civic alliance” said extending the period in which local residents and business owners may benefit from free trips on the A22 was like “putting a plaster on the problem”.

Alliance leader José Vitorino, former Faro Mayor, believes the only viable solution is the suspension of tolls. “By requesting this extension, Algarve Câmaras are giving the government reason to continue charging tolls on the A22,” he said.

Toll payment exemptions are due to end on June 30. The government is also expected to review the situation regarding the tolls in the region this month
