Lagos Câmara is backing a special needs school by providing support for the construction of a new residential home for 24 people with disabilities.
A spokesman from Lagos Câmara told the Algarve Resident: “Our commitment is to give a quick response to the requests made by parents, who, because of advanced age and the lack of family support, require residential facilities for their children.”
According to the school, NECI, as parents get older they are unable to provide the necessary personal assistance to children who, as they themselves get older, become even more dependent and in need of extra assistance.
A protocol has been approved by Lagos Câmara to support the construction of this new home by granting technical assistance in monitoring the project and technical support for the supervision of the work.
Lagos Câmara will also give financial support to the project, which will cost around €1.4 million.
“Apart from the financial support, Lagos Câmara has already given the land to build this facility, located at Vila da Luz and valued at more than €980,000,”added the spokesman.
NECI will need to obtain Government funding of more than €648,000 and raise financial support from other sources to cover the shortfall in funds for the project.
Special education specialist Dra Maria Eduarda Santos, who runs NECI, told the Algarve Resident: “I am eternally grateful to the foreign residents in the Algarve who, in so many colourful ways, have organised events, from cabarets to fashion shows, to raise funds for NECI.”
NECI also provides therapeutic support and occupational and social activities for users.
