Câmara redundancies

Faro Mayor Macário Correia has announced a plan to cut the number of municipal employees by 200.

“These will not be dismissals but redundancies,” he said. “These are cases of contracts which will not be renewed and age and medical retirements.”

Faro is one of six municipalities in Portugal that have around 1,000 employees.

“There are cases of ill-health, alcoholism and even those who simply do not want to work,” he said.

“There will be constant pressure in cases of workers who refuse to work and, in a short time, if they don’t accept they have to work, they will be made redundant.”
