A TOTAL of 122 abandoned vehicles have been removed from the streets of Vila Real de Santo António over the past five years and recycled.
The vehicles were collected by Ecometais, a subsidiary of the national waste management company Águas de Portugal and stored in a warehouse nearby.
The wheels, batteries, oils and petrol were removed from the bodies of the cars and sent to recycling plants. The cars were crushed into blocks and sent to factories to be reused.
This initiative was a conscious effort by the câmara to maintain a cleaner city centre. The câmara is due to receive 6,000 euros for their recycling efforts from the government.
