Olhanense went into their local Algarve derby against Os Armacenenses (Armação de Pêra) knowing that a win was vital if they wished to remain in touch with the top teams in the Campeonato de Portugal.
Olhanense manager Ivo Soares – he was in charge of the visitors last season – replaced the suspended Dongwook Lee with João Correia making only his third start of the season.
The extremely poor state of the pitch hampered both teams as they endeavoured to play the ball on the ground and it was no surprise that passes went astray.
On 20 minutes, Olhanense nearly broke the deadlock when Lucas Salinas saw his shot rebound off the upright.
The one moment of quality in the first-half came seven minutes before the interval when the lively Hassan broke down the left-wing and centred hard and low across the face of the Armacenenses goal.
Caleb ghosted in-between two defenders to hammer the ball into the top of the net from close range for his first goal of the season.
The second-half saw both teams up their pace, but it was the home side who looked more likely to score. Hassan had a golden opportunity to increase Olhanense’s lead 10 minutes from time when played through with only the keeper to beat.
Luís Pedrosa narrowed the angle and the 24-year-old striker slotted his shot wide of the far post.
Olhanense move up to seventh place on 18 points, ahead of Os Armaceneneses on goal difference.
