Cable repairs

A robot submarine has been launched from a French ship in the Mediterranean to try and reconnect severed underwater cables.

The cables, which provide internet and phone communications to parts of the Middle East, were cut on December 19, possibly by a passing trawler.

Experts have warned that it could be days before the problem is fixed and are worried about the knock on effects to the regional economies.

Egypt has been able to restore most of its communications but large parts of the Middle East are still left unconnected.
