Busy winter day for Algarve firefighters

Firefighters were busy for a typical winter day in the Algarve yesterday, battling two wildfires – one in Alte (Loulé) and the other in Rio Seco (Faro).

The first blaze broke out in the rural area of Zambujal, Alte at around 4.30pm and was at one point tackled by as many as 45 firefighters aided by 12 vehicles and one helicopter.

The other started in a cane field in Rio Seco near one of the main access roads to Faro, just as the sun started going down. There were fears that the flames could reach nearby houses and the railway but over 40 firefighters from Faro, Tavira and Olhão were able to bring the blaze under control.
