After six weeks of tough battles during the Carvoeiro Clube de Ténis Club Championships, the Grand Finals Day arrived on December 6.
This year, a record was achieved with 344 players registered for the 20th Club Championships.
Graeme Hulme was the referee and managed to keep everything under control. The day was buzzing with players and spectators right from early in the morning until the last match was played.
The highlight of the day was the “Men A” final between club’s coach Serge Inácio and player Daniel Davies. After a breathtaking two hours, the victory was Serge’s in a three-set match.
During lunchtime, everybody mingled on the club’s terrace, enjoying lunch and then went off to play or to watch a match. As there were matches taking place at the same time on the eight courts, it got really busy with people enjoying an exciting atmosphere.
At 5pm, the last match, “Men’s doubles B”, was played as mulled wine was served to the crowd. Playing were club coach Serge Inácio and sub 12 player Aron Sgajszczak against Coach Fintan Steiger and sub 12 player Mário Capitão. Fintan and Mário were the winners of the match.
The prize giving ceremony was held in the clubhouse with trophies presented to all the winners and runner-ups and special awards for Patty Witte (adopt, adept, improve), Anne Irving (achievement), Yentl Duyker and Christopher Raspin (Fair-play).
To finalise the club championships and to mark the opening of the ranking-board, a dice was rolled in order to choose which numbers would get the priority of challenging first.
The ranking-board had been updated during the championships so all the players could see their new positions immediately after the prize giving.
