A NON-profit youth organisation based in Burgau is looking for volunteers to help develop educational and recreational activities for children and young adults in the Algarve.
The Projecto Novas Descobertas, New Discoveries Project, offers facilities and guidance for youths throughout the school year as well as holiday camps and European exchanges.
Nita Barroco, a community worker who spent many years working with children in Canada, founded the community-centre based organisation in 1994.
“The main objective of the New Discoveries Project is the social inclusion of all children, from all backgrounds,” she told The Resident. “I wanted to use what I studied in Canada to help and support children in Portugal.”
Support with school work and activities are run every weekday at the community centre, which has 10 computers with internet connections.
“Our only full time member of staff is a qualified teacher who helps children with their school work every week day,” said Nita Barroco. “We also have yoga lessons for children and adults every Monday evening at the centre.”
During the holidays, several residential camps are held each year at Vale de Lama, Lagos, with children participating from around the country.
“Children and youths of several nationalities including British, Dutch and eastern Europeans are involved in our everyday and holiday activities.”
