Dear Editor,
Like an apparently increasing number of UK residents, we’re interested in taking up residency in Portugal, primarily for the better weather and its unique Non-Habitual Residency tax-free status.
With this in mind, we’re presently long-term renting in the Algarve and are talking to a number of UK expats here about the merits, and demerits, of their Algarve experiences.
Surprisingly, the consensus seems to be that Portugal, for expats, is a bureaucratic nightmare where all sorts of rules, regulations and delays dictate! Examples like complications concerning driving non-Portuguese cars in Portugal to successfully qualifying for the NHR tax-free status – these are just some of the instances quoted.
Could this be true when potential expats look “under the surface” of all the sales hype?
