LISBON’S FAMOUS Victorian bullring – Praça de Touros – will reopen next year, according to the Instituto Português do Património Arquitectónico (IPPAR), the Portuguese architectural heritage institute.
The red brick landmark, which dominates the city’s Campo Pequeno district, has been closed for six years. It has been undergoing complete restoration and refurbishment, and will include a shopping centre, cafés and restaurants, a cinema, underground parking and a moveable stage for theatre and shows. It is also to feature a removable canopy that will circle the entire ring to protect people from the elements.
According to Flávio Lopes, the director general of IPPAR, work on the bullring should be completed by March 2006.
