BULGARIAN PRESIDENT, Georgi Parvanov, made an official state visit to Portugal recently, and trade between the two nations topped the agenda. In February 2004, then-Prime Minister, José Manuel Durão Barroso, paid an official visit to Sofia to bolster bilateral ties and boost trade and investment in Bulgaria. Now Dr. Parvanov has received the key to the freedom of the city of Lisbon from Câmara President, Dr. Carmona Rodrigues, following talks with President Jorge Sampaio. With Portuguese exports falling within the European Union by around three per cent in the past few years compared to EU neighbours, Portugal is anxious to find new markets for its goods and services and Bulgaria is seen as a likely export candidate for Portuguese companies.
