Out of 100,500 tests, 31 cases of mad cow disease (BSE) were discovered in 2006, 18 less than the 49 detected in 2005 and the lowest number since 1999.
Portugal was subject to a ban on some meat and bovine exports for six years, due to a high number of cases when the epidemic spread in the late 90s. The ban was lifted in 2004, after Portugal implemented sufficient controls to minimise the risk of infection.
