The European Commission has agreed to provide €2 million to Portugal for the lease two extra firefighting aircraft this summer season, Ministry for Interior Administration José Luís Carneiro, said in Vila Nova de Gaia today. On the sidelines of the signing of an inter-administrative contract for the requalification of Avintes’ GNR police station, the minister said that Brussels “has made itself available to support member states to go to the market and try to find aircraft available, which are scarce”, as well as pilots. “Later this afternoon, I will leave for Brussels. We will have a meeting with the interior ministers from all over the European Union with the Commissioner for Civil Protection. It is even expected that the President of the Commission (Ursula von der Leyen) may be present,” he added.
