Brussels green-lights over €453 million in State aid for Azores’ SATA airlines

Tuesday sees the European Commission approve Portuguese State aid to Azores’ airline company SATA to the tune of €453.25 million. Explain reports, the money will involve “loans and State guarantees, envisioning remedies by way of a reorganisation of business structure”. Brussels maintains “the aid is necessary and adequate” and should secure SATA in terms of viability for the long-term “without the necessity for continuous public support”. SATA’s financial problems pre-date the pandemic.
