Brrrrr… World’s 36th Naturist Congress convenes in Caparica, just as temperatures plummet

Spare a thought today for members of Portugal’s naturist fraternity who will be starting a long weekend of activities to celebrate the 36th World Naturist Congress on the Costa da Caparica.

Says Lusa, around 40 federations, as well as delegates from countries that don’t yet have naturist federations, will be taking part “hoping the initiative contributes to the growth of this “without shame or prejudice” lifestyle that respects Nature and ‘the other’.

The mantra is “that social nudity should be so natural that no-one thinks of a body as naked, but as a person that is there, naturally”.

This is the first time the congress has taken place in Portugal, and it opens on the day the Indian Summer registered a sharp dip in temperatures and some rain.

Lusa says that “various trips around the boroughs of Almada and Sesimbra” are planned, both of which sport popular nudist beaches.

There are around 10,000 naturists in Portugal and official beaches celebrating the lifestyle can now be found all over the country: two in the Alentejo (Salto and dos Alteirinhos), two in the Algarve (Ilha de Tavira and Barreta) and quite a few unofficial spots in between.
