Briton arrested after assaulting police officer

A policeman was attacked by a 26-year-old British tourist in Albufeira on New Year’s Eve.

The incident happened on the strip in Oura at around 2am, when two on-duty policemen heard a dispute as tourists tried to get into a taxi which was already full.

When police became involved, the 26-year-old man from Paisley in Scotland punched the police officer in the face.

He spent two nights in police custody, over the public holiday, before being presented to the court in Albufeira on Friday, January 2, where he was charged with public disobedience and assaulting an officer.

He is free to return home for the moment but may be asked to return to Portugal at a later date. If found guilty, he faces a prison sentence of more than five years.
