British tourists saved from drowning

Two British tourists were dragged by a strong current out to sea when they were bathing on Amoreira beach in Aljezur on August 6.

They were rescued by the beach lifeguards, who said the tourists were in “deep trouble”.

Cruz Martins, captain of Portimão and Lagos ports, said: “The victims, who were around 20 years old, were in danger of drowning and were rescued thanks to the prompt action of the lifeguards, with the aid of surfboards.”

He added: “The rescue operation was not easy because the swimmers were being pushed away by the current and were unable to return to the beach. Despite the frightening situation they faced, they came out of this unscathed.”
