A British surfer, described as 46 years of age, died on the shore at Praia do Amado (Aljezur) on Saturday afternoon after “getting into difficulties”.
According to reports the so-far unidentified man got out of the sea, showing clear signs of distress.
He is believed to have suffered a heart attack.
Although in a section of the popular surfers’ beach not covered by lifeguards, those on duty rushed to his aid and tried life-support.
A statement from the AMN national maritime authority said: “In spite of all the reanimation efforts of lifeguards and INEM on the sand, death was declared at Lagos Hospital”.
The incident happened at 1.30pm.
