An 81-year-old British man died after falling and hitting his head while on a hike in the area of Odelouca in Monchique on Wednesday, March 12.
Reports Correio da Manhã tabloid, the man was accompanied by his wife when he slipped and fell, having hit his head on a rock.
The tragic accident happened early in the afternoon in an isolated and hard-to-reach area known as Fonte Santa, near the Odelouca dam, which is believed to have been the couple’s destination.
Monchique’s firefighters were called as well as an INEM emergency service team who tried to revive the man but to no avail. His death was declared at the scene.
GNR police were also called and investigated the scene of the incident.
The body was taken to Portimão’s legal medicine office where an autopsy is due to take place to determine the exact cause of death.
