British newspaper The Guardian has recommended three destinations in Portugal – the Santa Maria Island, in the Azores, the Costa Vicentina, in the Algarve/Alentejo, and Comporta, in the Alentejo – in an article entitled ‘20 of the best bargain beach holidays’.
The newspaper spotlighted 20 destinations guaranteed to “beat the winter blues by planning your perfect beach holiday, many of them new and offering great value for money”.
Apart from Portugal, some of the beaches on the list are in Italy, Spain, Greece, Canada, Kenya, Turkey, Albania, Croatia and Malta.
Santa Maria Island is top of the list and is described as having “wild, wooded landscapes, nature reserves, famously good custard tarts and one of the best and few white sand beaches in the archipelago, Praia Formosa.
The Costa Vicentina entry highlights the “new 150-mile-long path”, the Rota Vicentina, opening in April, along Portugal’s “neglected” Alentejo coastline, which will attract attention this year.
The last entry is Comporta, in the peninsula of Tróia, Setúbal. It is for people who are “craving a tropical beach but can’t venture beyond Europe”.
