A British man has been arrested in Alvor after he was found promoting illegal gambling in a local bar.
The arrest was made on September 30 at the unnamed bar in Alvor following an eight month investigation into gambling on horse races on the premises by police from Portimão.
The 46-year old British man along with the 45-year old French bar owner were both arrested by police at the scene while nine other people of various nationalities were also identified by police as taking part in the gambling.
Police seized two televisions, 150 Euros in cash as well as posters advertising the gambling activities in the bar.
A police spokesman said: “The investigation focused on illegal gambling which took place in the bar.
“Participants would bet on horse races shown on the two televisions in the bar.”
The two men who were arrested appeared before the Public Ministry in Portimão on October 1 where their identities and addresses were presented to the judge.
Investigations by the police continue into the case.
Despite being able to play the lottery or visit a casino, gambling remains illegal in Portugal.
