Bringing mackerel back to the table

An Algarve-wide campaign set out to promote the consumption of mackerel will see various cooking workshops take place at municipal markets throughout this month.

The culinary demonstrations will be given by chefs from the Portimão School of Tourism and Management, and will invite all to come along and learn the many ways of cooking mackerel – in an easy, simple way, producing delicious fish dishes that are enjoyable for the whole family.

Organised by Docapesca SA, this campaign has travelled across Portugal with the aim of encouraging local residents to start buying or increase the amount of mackerel that they buy, in order to ensure future existence of this traditional product.

Associated to the Mediterranean diet, mackerel is abundant off the Portuguese coast, making it a very economical dish.

The flavoursome fish is rich in protein, fatty acids and Omega-3, providing its consumer with much of their daily recommended nutrients.

In addition to lessons that took place in Quarteira and Loulé at the beginning of the month, workshops will be available in Faro on August 10 and 11, Vila do Bispo on August 16, Silves on August 17, Albufeira on August 18, Vila Real de Santo António on August 23 and Tavira on August 25.

Registration to participate in the workshops is free; however classes are limited to 12 people per lesson.

Two sessions will take place on the allocated days between 10am until 11am and 11am until 12pm.
