Lote 3 is the new entry level version of premium Dão wine M.O.B.
Some years ago, three of the Douro’s leading wine producers who share a passion of the lighter style and more elegant of red wines so typical of the Dão region got together and took over the operation of a Dão winery.
They created M.O.B, using the first initial of each of their surnames: Jorge Moreira, Francisco Olazabal e Jorge Seródio Borges. The project has been a success and the main wine that sells at around €25 is a top quality Dão. But only now have we seen an entry level wine with the M.O.B label reach the market, with the 2014 Lote 3 that was launched last year.
Costing €9.95 at Apolónia, this is a good and sensibly priced example of a Dão red in the modern style.
The wine is made from a blend of three most typical Dão varieties, Jaen, Alfrocheiro and Touriga Nacional, fermented in steel and aged in used French oak. This is a red that is well suited to being served slightly chilled.
The wine is medium to full bodied, fresh and elegant, with notes of mature berry fruit and chocolate on the nose, without a hint of oak. The tannins are well-rounded and supple, making this an easy-drinking wine, lots of fruit in the mouth and a dry finish.
