Algarve tourism and development entities are joining forces to create more welcoming conditions for motorhomers arriving in the region.
In a recent meeting between the CCDR (regional development commission) and Turismo do Algarve, policymakers agreed motorhomers could save the region’s low season.
The money they bring to the Algarve “signifies a lot to the local economy”, agreed tourism boss Desidério Silva – and the “negative effects” of wild camping could, he said, be offset by a network of support structures throughout the region.
These are encouraging words when only two years ago police and SEF immigration control officers were cracking down on “wild campers”.
“Motorhomes cannot be parked at night near beaches,” ports authority boss of the time Santos Pereira told newspapers.
The recent meeting heard how the Algarve is regularly visited by up to 40,000 motorhomes and these should be seen as “opportunities for business” as opposed to easy targets for stiff fines.
Thus, the first new support facility for campers will be opened shortly next to Sagres Fortress in the borough of Vila do Bispo, a popular area for motorhomers.

Representing an investment of around €25,000, the new caravan site aims to ensure the safety of motorhomers as well as safeguard the environment through the implementation of sanitation systems.
