NEW, RELAXED rules for duty-free goods have been announced and will come into force next year.
The new European Commission Directive nearly triples allowances for items purchased outside the EU, and is sure to lift the spirits of holidaymakers who visit the world’s top two shopping destinations – New York and Dubai. The limit for general goods has increased from 175 pounds sterling to 500 pounds sterling for air travellers, while for car and boat passengers, it is 220 pounds sterling. There will also be an increase from two to four litres on wine and no limit for perfume and eau de toilette. For fortified and sparkling wines, spirits and tobacco, there will be no change, although a limit of 16 litres will be introduced for beer.
